ABOUT GENA DURRETT: 

Virginia “Gena” Marie Durrett (10/20/1974 – 8/13/2025)  grew into a woman whose life was defined by compassion, grit, and a gift for making people feel seen. A natural caregiver, Gena devoted more than 20 years to healthcare having started her journey into nursing as a CNA at The Lingenfelter Center. After completing her nursing degree at Mohave Community College in Kingman, AZ, she began her career at Kingman Regional Medical Center in the Med-Surg unit. She eventually transitioned to the ICU, while also working per diem at the Joan & Diana Hospice Home. Patients knew her as a compassionate caregiver and a fierce advocate, while colleagues knew her as a calm presence, a gifted teacher, and a source of endless laughter. She was never afraid to tell it like it is, wrapping honesty in humor that made even the hardest moments easy to bear. After earning her Nurse Practitioner degree from Grand Canyon University, she began practicing in Bullhead City, AZ, before moving to Oregon with her husband to be closer to their son. There she joined the inpatient Palliative Care team at PeaceHealth Sacred Heart Medical Center in Springfield, OR,  where she continued to work even through her brief but courageous battle with cancer.
